At Home Therapeutic Exercises in Grand Rapids MI
At Kentwood Family Chiropractic, we complement gentle adjustments with therapeutic exercises tailored to your condition. These simple, targeted movements help strengthen weak muscles, improve flexibility, and stabilize the spine so your adjustments hold longer. As part of your personalized care plan, we’ll provide handouts and walk you through exactly how to do them safely at home or in the office, so you can stay active, recover faster, and prevent future injuries.
Lumbar Decompression
Lumbar decompression is a gentle, effective way to help correct disc problems in the lower back, like herniated or irritated discs. At Kentwood Family Chiropractic, we use a proven, hands-on method called Cox Flexion-Distraction Therapy to do this safely and comfortably.
During this treatment, you’ll lie face down on a special table designed for this technique. The lower half of the table moves and gently bends while your legs are secured. As the table slowly moves up and down, Dr. McAllister applies gentle pressure to the problem area in your spine. This creates an opening up of the space between the vertebra and a stretch in the disc, helping relieve pressure on irritated nerves, reduce pain, and pull healing fluids back into the disc space.
The movement is smooth and controlled - there’s no sudden twisting or popping - and many patients find it relaxing. By carefully opening the disc space between the vertebra, we help it heal naturally and get you back to feeling your best.
In Office Exercises – Vestibular Discs and Cervical Traction

- Vestibular Discs: A vestibular disc is like a small, firm cushion — similar in feel to sitting on a yoga ball. Patients sit on the disc and do a set of simple, prescribed exercises before their adjustment. These movements help activate and strengthen the large core muscles that support your spine. Using the disc warms up your muscles for the adjustment, improves spinal mobility and balance, and helps your adjustment hold better.
- Cervical Traction: Cervical traction is a gentle way to stretch and decompress the neck. We use a simple wall-mounted unit with a padded strap that goes behind your neck and a bar under your chin. You slowly bend your knees into a squat, which puts a light, comfortable stretch on your neck and spine. This helps take pressure off the neck joints and discs and works to restore the natural curve in your neck. The normal neck curvature is something many of us lose from too much sitting, poor posture, and constant phone use – and something that Dr. McAllister will look for on neck x-rays.
